the approach:

University of Manitoba Bisons’ Head of the Herd program is an opportunity for young athletes to be a Bison during pre-game. They join the team in warmups, announce starting lineups and meet the Bison athletes. After a hiatus during the pandemic, the Bisons needed to reintroduce the program.

The Head of the Herd for the men’s hockey team was eight-year-old Matthew. I presented the program in a fun way—I recorded and mic’d up Matthew to capture his interactions with the team on the ice, bench and locker room. At first, he was shy and said little but quickly warmed up to the team, staff and camera.

After Matthew’s job was done, I created a 20-second version of the video which was posted to @umbisons on Instagram on the same evening.

The marketing and communications team sends the one-minute video (below) to schools and Jr. Bisons program families to introduce the program. It’s helped garner interest among parents and young athletes and place the opportunity atop their minds for upcoming seasons.
